Is the Solar Wind Electron Strahl a Seed Population for the Earth’s Electron Radiation Belt?

نویسندگان

چکیده

1) Since the outer electron radiation belt is lost on occasion, needs seed electrons to rebuild. 2) The clear candidate for that population energetic substorm-injected in dipolar magnetosphere. 3) dipole come from suprathermal magnetotail plasma sheet, delivered by substorms. Scenario (1)–3) begs question: Where do these from? We are hypothesizing one source (perhaps dominant source) field-aligned strahl solar wind, which fresh corona.

Suprathermal Electron Strahl Widths in the Presence of Narrow-band Whistler Waves in the Solar Wind

We perform the first statistical study of the effects of the interaction of suprathermal electrons with narrow-band whistler mode waves in the solar wind (SW). We show that this interaction does occur and that it is associated with enhanced widths of the so-called strahl component. The latter is directed along the interplanetary magnetic field away from the Sun. We do the study by comparing the...

Variation of electron-strahl width in the high-speed solar wind: Ulysses observations

Halo electron velocity distributions have been surveyed during the first full Ulysses southern polar pass from January 1994 through April 1995. The data examined range from approximately 50◦ S heliolatitude to the maximum poleward extent of the Ulysses orbit, approximately 80◦ S, and then back through the solar equator to 35◦ N heliolatitude. During this traversal the radial distance of Ulysses...

The MAVEN Solar Wind Electron Analyzer

The MAVEN Solar Wind Electron Analyzer (SWEA) is a symmetric hemispheric electrostatic analyzer with deflectors that is designed to measure the energy and angular distributions of 3-4600-eV electrons in the Mars environment. This energy range is important for impact ionization of planetary atmospheric species, and encompasses the solar wind core and halo populations, shock-energized electrons, ...

Storm-dependent radiation belt electron dynamics

[1] Using recently published electron phase space densities (PSD) as a function of L* (L* is approximately the radial distance in Earth radii at the equator) and time, energization and loss in the Earth’s outer electron radiation belt were studied quantitatively and numerically using a radial diffusion model that included finite electron lifetimes and an internal source parameterized as a funct...
